Internal communications reportedly highlighted concerns about fuel contamination, particularly elevated levels of chloride and moisture found in fuel samples collected from different parts of the country. Automakers were concerned that such variations in fuel quality could potentially affect vehicle performance, durability and critical engine components over time.
The disclosures bring greater attention to the concerns that existed within the industry before the issue became part of a wider public debate.
