Assam has announced a significant tax relief measure for the state’s small tea growers, raising the agricultural income tax exemption limit to ₹10 lakh for growers with net annual agricultural income up to the revised threshold.

The decision is expected to provide much-needed financial relief to small tea-growing households across the state, many of whom depend on tea cultivation as an important source of livelihood. By increasing the exemption limit, the government aims to reduce the tax burden on eligible growers and give them greater financial flexibility to manage their agricultural operations.

Small tea growers have become an increasingly important part of Assam’s tea economy, contributing significantly to the state’s overall tea production while supporting employment and livelihoods in rural and semi-rural communities. The sector also plays a crucial role in sustaining local economies connected to tea cultivation, including labour, transportation, processing and allied activities.

With the higher exemption threshold, eligible growers will be able to retain a larger share of their agricultural earnings. This could provide greater scope for reinvestment in plantations, maintenance, labour requirements, equipment and other farm-related expenses.

The move is being seen as an important step towards supporting Assam’s grassroots tea producers and strengthening the state’s wider tea economy. As small growers continue to contribute to Assam’s position as one of India’s leading tea-producing regions, targeted policy support and financial relief could help improve the sustainability of their operations.

The ₹10 lakh exemption marks a notable shift in the tax relief available to small tea growers and comes as a significant development for Assam’s tea-growing community.
