Guwahati, June 6: Assam's iconic Muga silk industry is set for a major transformation following the launch of a ₹411-crore development programme aimed at strengthening the entire value chain from cocoon production to finished textile products. The initiative is expected to support thousands of households connected to the Muga ecosystem while helping the industry access higher-value markets.
The programme focuses on improving productivity, enhancing quality standards and increasing value addition within the state. Industry stakeholders believe the investment could help Assam strengthen its position in the premium textile segment, where demand for authentic and sustainable luxury fabrics continues to grow.
The Muga silk sector supports a large network of rearers, weavers, artisans and traders. Experts say improved infrastructure, modern processing facilities and stronger branding could significantly increase earnings across the supply chain.
The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to promote Northeast India's traditional industries as globally recognised premium brands. Increased export potential and stronger participation in high-end textile markets could provide long-term benefits for the state's rural economy.
